Privacy meter

A zipped coin hides among everyone else's, so the pool is only as private as the crowd in it. This is that crowd, counted without the project's own wallets.

Goes live at launch. zipcoin isn't on mainnet yet, so there is no crowd to count. How we'll count it is below.

Deposit sizes, from outside

Wide buckets on purpose: an odd, exact amount is easier to follow in and out of the pool than a common one.

How we count

We count the different addresses that put ZC into the privacy pool, and leave out every address the project itself controls. What's left is the crowd a deposit disappears into.

  1. Read every deposit. Each Deposited event from the pool is already public on Ethereum: the address that deposited and the amount.
  2. Leave out the project's own. Every zipcoin contract (private sends and shop revenue go back into the pool through them), the treasury Safe, the Entrypoint's owner and postman, every address that has bonded as a courier (couriers make cover traffic from their own wallets), the wallets the operators run (Veridia's residents and treasury, couriers' cover wallets), and any wallet a project funding wallet sent ZC to.
  3. Count what's left in each window: deposits, the different addresses behind them, and their sizes in five wide buckets.

What the number can't tell you

  • One person can use many addresses, and a project wallet we don't know about counts as outside, so there may be fewer people than it shows.
  • A deposit from a smart wallet or an exchange can stand for several people, so there may also be more.
  • Addresses aren't people, and we never label an address as a user. Only counts are published; every deposit behind them is on-chain already.
  • Timing and amounts matter too. A big crowd helps less if you deposit and withdraw the same odd amount a minute apart. See Privacy.
